New Shelter Arrivals and Claiming Your Pet

New Shelter Arrivals

All animals at the shelter will be held for the stray hold period as required by Wisconsin State Statute 173.19. If the animal’s owner does not claim their pet within that time frame, the animal will be released for adoption.

We photograph all new arrivals and post on our Facebook page. Please remember that the appearance of animals can change while they are running loose (injuries, weight-loss, grooming issues, etc.) and that descriptions can be subjective. If you think that a picture or description resembles your pet, please come to the shelter and see the animal in person.

Claiming Your Pet

Please contact us immediately at 608-325-9600. If it is outside of the business hours or we cannot get to the phone, please leave a message and we'll contact you as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can e-mail shelter@greencountyhumane.org anytime.

Be prepared to bring the following when picking up your pet:

  1. Proof of ownership (vet records, license, or adoption/purchase paperwork, etc.)
  2. Proof of rabies vaccination
  3. Proof of license if you live in Green County

Why we ask for this:

State law requires that we ask for proof of ownership and that any animals we release be current on vaccinations and licensed. If your animal is not current on rabies, we can do that here at the shelter or you can prepay with your own veterinarian. We can also license your pet at the shelter.

Levied Fees

The following fees are levied to offset the shelter expense for care of the animal:

Dogs

Days 1 - 3
$30 per day
Days 4 - 7
$110

Cats

Days 1 - 7
$15
